Combining colour benefits with sustainability
Injection World
July/August 2019
“Cabot Corporation cites the most obvious market needs in colour and masterbatch at present to be flexibility in colouration and reducing impact on mechanical properties when adding specific colour additives such as carbon black. “The market is also seeking the ability to mix and over-colour various polymer and additive types with the increasing use of recycled polymer,” says Sebastian Heitkamp, Global Segment Marketing Manager. “The industry is being influenced by a shift to higher use of recycled materials, as well as the challenge to improve colouristic properties with less colourants. The challenge with recycled material is that most are not pure in their colour, and therefore require additional effort to cover possible defects on the surface. It is also important that colour have a minimal impact on the effect of the desired functionality, such as haptics and odour.”

Meeting the E-mobility Challenge
Injection World
May 2019
“Vehicle lightweighting continues to be a primary trend and a catalyst for developing new materials for under-the-hood applications for injection moulders, according to Cabot Corporation. ‘Automotive OEMs are still targeting a higher share of plastics per car, and this applies for power train systems in both internal combustion engines and electric vehicles (EV),’ says Dominique Strassler, Global Marketing Segment Manager. ‘However, for EVs the additional weight of the battery of around 200kg is an additional consideration. Reduced weight helps to comply with CO2 regulations, but also enables weight to be allocated for gadgets and new technology systems. For EVs, thermal management is also a key topic, because the battery runs optimally at a certain temperature - not too hot and not too cold. Materials that can provide thermal conductivity, either combined with electrical conductivity or specifically without it, will be in higher demand. The trend toward plastics recycling is also highly relevant. Automotive OEMs look at this from two perspectives. Firstly, whether materials and plastics that are used in cars can be recycled later, and secondly whether automotive parts can be made out of these recycled materials.’”

Keeping heat on the move
Compounding World
April 2019
“With increasing functionalisation of plastics, in particular in markets  including electronics and transportation, there is notable market demand  for thermally conductive compounds,” according to Sebastian Heitkamp, Global Marketing Segment Manager at Cabot Corporation. “The main trends are electrification of cars, or increasing requirements with automotive and electronics ‘merging’ these two major plastic applications,” he says. “Heat management in the car is getting more important as the batteries are a new source of heat. With batteries becoming a structural part of a vehicle, designers and plastic engineers have to solve the challenge of managing heat transfer through plastic materials.”

Driving Demand for optimized electrically conductive plastics
Compounding World
February 2019
“Sebastian Heitkamp, Global Marketing Segment Manager at Cabot Corporation also sees that the market for electrically conductive compounds is continuously growing in various plastic applications. ‘New developments in electrically conductive compounds are mainly driven by increased safety requirements across many industries,’ he says. ‘In addition, as we see automotive manufacturers shift toward light weighting, plastics continuously replace traditional materials, such as metals, for which new functionalities in electrical conductivity are required.’”

Black is the Colour
Plastics News Europe
October 2018
"'The ESD Segment is one in which a lot of product innovation is going on,' said George Haines, senior marketing manager for Cabot’s Specialty Carbons Business, in an interview with Plastics News Europe. 'Of themselves, plastics are not conductive,' he said. 'But there are numerous applications that you want them to be.' Plastics may be the material of choice for a particular application for various reasons – because of the chemical resistance, their durability, or other properties, such as for light weighting purposes in metal replacement applications. However, for ESD purposes, it is important to change the plastic’s insulative properties to be able to use it in applications where a sudden static discharge can trigger a fire, explosion, or damage parts. Hence to avoid static build-up, a filler must be compounded into the polymer that will dissipate electricity. Today, some 70% of all ESD compounds contain carbon black."
